What is a Dalgona Green Tea?

Dalgona is a drink that consists of milk topped with a flavored foam. It was first created in Korea and named after a type of sugar candy in Korea. The original Dalgona consisted of milk topped with a coffee foam.

It’s made simply by vigorously mixing instant coffee, sugar, and a bit of water, into a thick creamy foam. The drink became popular shortly after the pandemic struck and people were forced to stay indoors.

I remember seeing this drink explode all across Youtube, with everyone and their mothers making it! I decided to try it for myself and I found that I joined in on the Dalgona love train!

However, the amount of coffee used to make the drink is quite a lot, so I wanted a healthier, less jitter-inducing dalgona drink. Thus, this recipe was born!

Dalgona Green Tea: Made With Four Simple Ingredients!

I got some beautiful green tea powder, confectioners sugar for sweetness, almond milk (but you can use any kind of milk you’d like), and for the main foaming agent, I’m going to be using heavy whipping cream. Now heavy whipping cream is perfect for when you want to work with a powder like a matcha or even a cocoa powder.

Let's mix up some Dalgona Green Tea!

Now I’m going to mix everything together in my measuring cup, and to this, I’m going to add some green tea matcha powder. You don’t want to add too much because it is quite strong. I add a tablespoon of confectioner sugar (you can use regular sugar if you’d like), and about three tablespoons of hot water.

Now make sure you mix this to get rid of any of the lumps and finally add about 1/4 of a cup of heavy whipping cream. I mix this together with a hand mixer on low speed until everything starts to come together. If you’re using a high fat whipping cream like I am, you want to be careful because if you go too high it’ll start to clump up and become almost like butter. So go nice and low until you start to see it thicken up and become a soft cream.

Now you can see that it’s nice and creamy and there are soft peaks forming. To finish serve this dalgona, it’s dead simple: just fill a glass up with some milk and add the green tea foam right on top. Mix it all together right before drinking and you have a wonderful green tea drink! It is the perfect balance sweetness and bitterness, and it has a wonderful grassy taste.
